After leaving Morro Bay, we stopped at a protected beach to view the elephant seals. It was pretty fantastic as you can see.Previously, I did actually walk down to the beach to put my toes in - but it is as cold as New Hampshire waters so I dabbed my hands in only.
Today was a long drive, and I feel like I am in a fog. Jose has been kind enough to take over the driving for now. I did enjoy driving by the vineyards along this stretch. They actually label each section of vineyard with signs large enough to read from the road - Chardonnay, Merlot, etc. Then there were a number of field that sparkled like diamonds as we rode along. Jose told me that is where the get champagne from! Hmmm...
Next was Hearst Castle - we opted not to take the tour. Can you believe, my fellow tour guides, that the one that we wanted when we arrived was already sold out and we needed to make reservations ahead of time!? Hee hee. Now really, I did my research ahead of time and already knew that before we left Kanab. We did see a 40 minute video about Hearst's Dream on an iMax screen which was pretty cool. That's all we had time for as the original plan was to camp in Santa Cruz. However, we only got as far as Big Sur, had dinner and found an awesome cabin (already mentioned that we got a steal on that one).
I could have stayed in the cabin forever nestled among the redwoods near the river. Jose started a small campfire outside, I made some tea and sat under the stars till the fire - and I - were out.
Next morning, we backtracked a few miles to have breakfast at a place called Nepanthe. the views are outstanding, and you were right, Raven, we did not want to leave. Pretty much from Hearst Castle through Big Sur is all you need to experience driving up PCH...
